Located in Nevada City, California, this vehicle gives productions working in the state access to a period-accurate 1970s van without needing to arrange transport from farther away. Crews filming in California can now consider it for scenes that call for authentic vintage styling in a compact, easy-to-stage package.

Spotlight on this 1973 Volkswagen Westfalia Bus California

The vehicle, known as Buster, carries factory Sumatra Green paint with chrome accents, a pop-top roof, and upgraded 15-inch wheels. These elements create strong visual presence in wide exterior shots and road-trip sequences. The interior features an open rear layout with the original sofa and cot arrangement plus vintage cabin details, giving crews room to add props or shoot through the side and rear doors.

Production teams working in California value the van’s straightforward appearance for both static setups and owner-driven moves. The restored 1.7L air-cooled engine with new dual carburetors and braking system supports reliable on-set handling when the owner operates the vehicle. All use remains limited to static display or chaperoned driving scenes, with the owner serving as the dedicated handler for delivery, staging, and repositioning.

Picture Car Company and the California Picture Car Market

Picture Car Company works with the USA Movie Cars network to connect productions with vehicles listed across multiple states. This approach helps location managers and picture car coordinators locate options closer to their shoots. USA Movie Cars partners with state picture-car sites such as California Picture Cars so that crews searching for local vehicles can reach relevant listings more quickly.

Nevada City, California sits in a region that sees steady film, commercial, and photography work. Having a 1973 Volkswagen Westfalia Bus California listed through this network lets producers based in northern California consider the van without long-distance transport. The arrangement keeps the process simple for independent filmmakers and larger crews alike.

History of the 1973 Volkswagen Westfalia Bus California

The 1973 model year placed the Westfalia Kombi in the middle of the second-generation Type 2 production run. These vans became common symbols of 1970s travel and outdoor lifestyle across the United States. Their boxy shape, large windows, and pop-top roofs made them recognizable in period photography and film from that decade onward.

Westfalia conversions added camping features to the standard Volkswagen van platform, which helped the model appear in countless images of California road trips and backcountry routes. The Sumatra Green finish on this example matches a factory color offered during the period, preserving the original visual character that many productions seek when recreating 1970s settings.

California Picture Car Rental Uses

Producers can use the van for establishing shots of 1970s neighborhoods or rural routes in California. Its exterior works well as a character vehicle parked at a campsite, motel, or roadside location. The open interior layout supports set dressing for lifestyle or commercial scenes that need a retro interior backdrop.

Music video and still photography teams often place the van in frame for its clean lines and period details. Event planners have staged similar vehicles as photo opportunities or branded backdrops. The owner’s presence as handler keeps repositioning simple during long shooting days.
